Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) 叙情的で流麗、メランコリック、絢爛豪華な管弦楽法により絶大な人気を誇るロシアを代表する作曲家。多岐にわたる作曲ジャンルがあるが残念ながらフルートのオリジナル曲は見つからない。しかし、オーケストラの中のフルートの使い方は感心させられる。チャイコフスキーがクーラウのフルート・カルテットを吹いたという話は本当だろうか？この無言歌は1867年に作曲されたピアノのための3曲からなる組曲｢ハープサルの思い出｣の3曲目の作品である。ハープサルとは現エストニア領にある場所の名称でチャイコフスキーが、1867年フィンランドを目指した旅行中の滞在場所で、この地で作曲されたことが曲名の由来である。原曲はピアノソロ曲であるが、ヴァイオリンとピアノのために編曲されているものもある。
